Is Your HVAC System Using More Electricity Than It Should?

Posted on: 10 January 2023

Most people realise that an air conditioning system can use a considerable amount of energy as it relies on electricity for its function. In fact, your HVAC system could represent the lion's share of your monthly utility bill, and as such, you want to ensure that it is in the best condition and works efficiently at all times. So, you will certainly want to be on the lookout for any electrically-related issues. These may not only result in a potential failure but could also contribute to your operational costs. What should you focus on if you suspect that you may have an issue with your current system?

Inspect the Thermostat

The first place to look is your thermostat. This is effectively the control centre, that adjusts the temperature according to the internal conditions and will cycle your A/C on or off when needed. Clearly, this part relies on electrical circuitry and can thus be affected by a wide range of associated issues.

If it's been some time since you inspected the thermostat, dust, dirt, or grime could be affecting its internal components. These may need to be cleaned, but you also need to be on the lookout for any loose connections or damaged wiring. Sometimes, the circuit board can fail, or the heat "anticipator" can jam in place.

Upgrade Electrical Wiring

When was the last that you upgraded the wiring in your property, as issues can arise here? Some of the connections may come loose, or the wiring may start to lose its protective insulation. When this happens, it can lead to a short circuit or fire risk. Clearly, it's not a good idea to address any issues yourself as there is danger involved. But if you can see suspect wiring issues, you may need to get a complete overhaul to bring your system up to code.

Look at Bigger HVAC Electrical Issues

Looking at the HVAC system itself, several potential problems could cause it to use more power than it should. Again, age can be a factor. If you have an older compressor, it may tend to overheat, be less efficient and draw more electricity than it should. If a capacitor is on its way out, this could also be problematic. Don't forget that something as simple as a blocked air filter can certainly make the unit use more "juice" than it should.
